Located in Chevy Chase, MD, this complete home remodel of a 1930s Tudor was a true labor of love. The gifted and inspired kitchen designer, Emily Bourgeois, from Charlotte, NC (Bourgeois McGinn Builders), worked with Charlotte on the updated kitchen, which replicates the original Tudor revival style of the old home.
Emily's mastery of architectural elements created the backdrop for this original design. Structural elements like beams and arches are used to define the space and lend a warm, cozy feel. The wood elements were treated with a limed oak finish to keep the interior from feeling heavy. Reclaimed shiplap walls add texture and scale to the updated breakfast room. Layered neutral fabrics and materials keep the look timeless.
“As in many of the spaces I design, an upholstered banquette not only maximizes seating within a smaller footprint but creates so much comfort with just a little extra investment,” notes Charlotte.
The banquette’s typical proximity to windows is ideal for reading, napping, and enjoying the winter sunshine.
Practically indestructible and easy to clean, a seagrass rug was placed underfoot to compliment the color scheme. Charming rustic custom built-ins add storage for the client’s collection of antique pudding molds. Framed pressed botanicals and seaweed specimens help to bring the outdoors in.
And don’t overlook Charlotte’s “Burberry” plaid paint palette or her selection of highly practical and sustainable marmoleum flooring.
